Basic Science for Students of Paint Technology
General Introduction
Technical developments in the Paint Industry over the last 70 years or so have made it essential for students in this field to have a sound understanding of basic scientific principles.
This monograph is directed towards those students who have had limited opportunities to acquire such an understanding.
Water-borne Resins
Introduction
The vast majority of coatings have four basic components. These are the resin, solvent, pigment and additive systems. Continuing environmental legislation is ensuring that paint systems are increasingly water-borne and since resins and binders are the most important part of a coating, more of them are being developed by resin chemists and there is a constantly increasing use bycoating formulators.
In this monograph different water-borne resin systems will be described and discussed in a fair degree of detail and where necessary, reference will be made to other publications for a more in depth study if required.
The Basics of Solvents and Thinners
Introduction
...we have some very bright people out there with a basic education and they need only a little help. We could throw them in the deep end, but it would be better to teach them to float first. The object of these monographs is to help our students to bridge the gap. It is hoped that, by explaining the basic concepts, in the least complicated manner, emphasising only the points they really need to know, they will have a better understanding of what is going on and be less confused. We are not targeting the higher modules of the course but only the beginners.
